What I Learned About Action Research

I learned that action research can be used as a tool to help promote collaboration, communication and analysis of common problems or concerns in a school or classroom. When using action research educators identify a problem, research, collect and analyze the data. Then, take strategic action to fix or improve the problem, monitor the progress then reflect and report the results.

I learned that there are many benefits of conducting an action research study. These benefits can range from teacher professional development to improving teacher-student relationships.  This type of research due to how the conductor must become intimate and active with the subject matter has the potential to impact school change, and provide engaging and reflective research to guide others. Through this process educators can find solutions to an educational problem.

I will use this research as the basis of my athletic program philosophy. That is why I chose to do action research over behavior management in athletics. I feel that is will be a great way to improve current behaviors in our athletic program as well as build connectedness with our classroom teachers, athletes and coaches. Improving the behavior of our athletes should also positively contribute to the teaching and learning environment. Through this process I hope to condition our athletes to focus and be successful in the classroom.

I also believe it is a good subject considering most athletes have aspirations of going to college. I will include in the program some goal setting to motivate and reinforce positive behaviors. As a result, program should have a positive affect on our athlete’s grade point averages. If sports is what motivates, then I will use that influence to promote a culture of positive behaviors and life long learning.
